Vocabulary may be forgotten, but the tales of Rose Latulippe, La Chasse-galerie, Ti-Jean, La Corriveau, Bouki et Lapin and many others will live on in the memories of students for years to come.
Finally, legendes from the North American francophone culture can be recounted entirely in French through the use of illustrations, with approximately 9 per story. Twenty-three stories span the calendar year and can be linked to the fëtes celebrated in Rigodon… Fêtons! But of course, stories can be told at any time of the year.
What is special about this program is that the teacher or librarian can recreate the feeling of intimacy by gathering the children close and placing the book over a tripod on the knees or a table. In a flip-chart effect, the children see the illustrations on one side as the teacher reads the text on the other. The vocabulary is very simple since the illustrations are explicit. In addition, teachers who use the Gesture Approach to language learning have their hands free to gesticulate the words. Students as well can become storytellers, as an even more simplified version of the story appears on each page.
The 23 illustrated stories are gathered into 3 books : Automne, Hiver and Printemps-Été. A guide book accompanies the program, containing background information for the teacher on storytelling, a « Grimoire » or spellbook explaining the characters in the French oral tradition, and many storytelling activities, including 5 more stories.
